An Interview with Joyce Chepkirui

Published by John Hancock on April 8, 2015

Joyce Chepkirui recently won the Honolulu Marathon and is a half marathon specialist with a 1:06:19 best. She is married to Erick Kibet, who is also her coach. Running “runs” in her family, as 2011 Boston Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai is Chepkirui’s first cousin. Joyce is looking forward to the Boston Marathon because she thrives on the strategy it requires. She took time out of her training schedule to answer a few questions for us!

When did you know you had talent in running?
Joyce Chepkirui: My parents were good runners, so from an early age I knew I could run and I wanted to be a runner, to compete.

What was a pivotal moment in your career?
Joyce Chepkirui: A turning point in my career was after having a successful 2014 season, I realized that I don’t enjoy traveling as much as before and that I needed to compete less and turn to the marathon. Now I am fully prepared for training because of the long months without competition.

How has your success in running changed your life?
Joyce Chepkirui: Running gave me opportunity to travel, compete, and be the best I can be doing something I love.
