London stars made to wait

Martin Lel and Sammy Wanjiru will have to wait another week before learning if they have been chosen for the Olympic Games in Beijing after producing a thrilling finish in the Flora London Marathon.

Lel, winner of a third title in four years in a course record of 2hrs 5mins 15secs, edged out 21-year-old Wanjiru by only nine seconds in a classic race but both were unsure before the race of Kenya's selection policy.

And now they will have to sweat it out until Athletics Kenya selectors announce the three-man Olympic team after next Monday's Boston Marathon.

Three officials - secretary general David Okeyo, treasurer Joseph Kinyua and assistant secretary general Ibrahim Hussein - were present in London, where they were highly impressed with the display of all the Kenyan athletes.

Olympic spokesman Hussein said before the race: "The London and the Boston marathon, which takes place next Monday, are the official trials before we decide who will be picked for Beijing.

"The best of the guys will be here and then in Boston, after which we will name the marathon team.

"We will also assess the performances of our runners in other meetings before announcing our decision."
